about

First song I did using my fostex Model 80, which uses 1/4" tape and fits up to 8 tracks on it. If you listen closely at some points you can hear a squeaking sound, which was the reels as they turned on the machine. I didn't realize it was going to get picked up on the mic but I really liked the takes I had gotten and didn't want to do them over so I kept it.

I turned the tape speed down so the whole song slowed to a crawl and the vocals that you hear during the chorus (force all reason away...) sound lower pitched than usual. This was also the first song I had done with a drum machine, as I gave up my practice space where I had access to a full set and can't play in my apartment, unless I'm ready to get evicted.

I honestly don't really know what this song is about. It doesn't have any particular story behind it and the lyrics, as well as the mood are made up of different pieces of instances from the past. One thing I was referencing was the inability to be able to stray far from your dealer when you're strung out, and the anxiety that is always there under the surface when you're running low and you have no money, or ride over there etc. That's a feeling that stayed with me for a while after I got clean, and I still dream about the panic that sets in when you run into problems getting your fix for whatever reason.

Fun stuff!

lyrics

forced expression / that's the price you pay
4 seasons but I like the change
blessed, cursed / baby, life is strange
ask first / maybe I can prey

of course yr leaving / no, you can't stay
for sick reasons that you can't explain
born free, though you can't say
fall asleep before you erase

force all reason away and now I'm laughing
all the people not what they say
and I'm a' listen to the Beach Boys
slipping away
whatcha waiting for?
the freedom to do what they say
would you wait for me now?
