I recorded this, and the other songs on the album this song will be on, while staying with my grandparents for a few months before moving cross country. I had most of my instruments already en route to my new home on the opposite coast so I used what I could fit in my car (one guitar, synth, drum machine, and Tascam 688 8-track cassette machine) and recorded a batch of songs in their basement.

Being home again and living in the same place where I had previously lived with my younger brother and being surrounded by old family photos and memories put me in a place where I was ultra aware of how much tragedy and destruction had befallen my family and friends from this disease of addiction, and the fact that I am still here and able to do what I love weighed heavily on my soul. Guilt, and regret were there with me in everything I did and instead of trying to ignore it or seek therapy, I allowed myself to feel all these different emotions fully and without interference and put them into the music I was making. It felt like a way to pay tribute to the people we've lost along the trip and tell their stories, even if I would be the only one to truly know the specific characters in the songs.
